The Mississippi Digital Library is Mississippi's first effort to develop the infrastructure, collaboration model, standards, and workflow to support a lasting cooperative digital library program for the state. With funding awarded in December 2003 by the federal Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS www.imls.gov), the library began as a partnership between the University of Southern Mississippi, Delta State University, the University of Mississippi, Tougaloo College, Jackson State University, and the Mississippi Department of Archives and History.

The collaboration currently focuses on primary sources associated with the civil rights era, since the partner repositories hold rich collections on that topic. Participants are creating a union database of electronic finding aids to provide statewide intellectual control for Mississippi 's civil rights collections for the first time. They are also digitizing selected materials from partner repositories to create a globally accessible digital archive. The result is an online research quality collection of letters, diaries, photographs, state and organizational records, oral histories, and other primary sources that provide first-hand documentation of the civil rights era, materials that have national significance considering Mississippi's place in the movement.

The ultimate aim of the Mississippi Digital Library is to provide access to primary source materials from museums, archives, libraries, and other cultural heritage institutions throughout the state, covering a wide range of subject areas.
