The Mississippi Digital Library

The Mississippi Digital Library is Mississippi’s first effort to develop a lasting cooperative digital library program for the state. With funding awarded in December 2003 by the federal Institute of Museum and Library Services, the library began as a partnership between the University of Southern Mississippi, Delta State University, the University of Mississippi, Tougaloo College, Jackson State University, and the Mississippi Department of Archives and History.

The initial collaboration focused on materials associated with the civil rights era at the original six institutions, so a significant portion of materials available here are letters, diaries, photographs, state and organizational records, and oral histories that provide first-hand documentation of that time period.

However, the Mississippi Digital Library is slowly growing to include other institutions and materials related to other subjects. The ultimate aim is to provide access to primary source materials from museums, archives, libraries, and other cultural heritage institutions throughout the state, covering a wide range of subject areas.
